■ ブラウンバック上院議員北朝鮮体制を「邪悪」と非難
３月３日午後４時から、家族会・救う会訪米団はブラウンバック上院議員と約１時
間面談しました。面談冒頭、同議員はブルーリボンの趣旨を聞き、自分も胸につける
と言ってくださったので、横田早紀江さんがリボンを胸にお付けしました。
同議員は拉致を認めながら、被害者とその家族を未だに解放せず、また真実な情報
を提供しない北朝鮮当局を「クレージー」と形容し、横田団長が読み上げた訪米アピー
ル（３日付け本メールニュースで公開）に全面的な賛意を表明しました。
そして、近く北朝鮮問題が国連安保理事会で取り上げられるが、そこで、核問題だ
けでなく人権問題としての拉致問題も取り上げられるべきであり、、日本政府がその
立場を強く打ち出すべきで、自分はアメリカ政府にそのように働きかけると約束しま
した。
また、同議員は北朝鮮は「邪悪な体制（evil regime)」であり、多くの国民を殺し、
ミサイル開発や強制収容所の維持など、世界最悪の体制の一つである、訪米団滞在中
に米メディアがもっとアプローチするように働きかけたいと語りました。
面談終了後、訪米団を見送りに議員会館の廊下まで出たとき、同議員は立ち話で拉
致被害者全員を解放しない北朝鮮を「クレージー」とあらためて述べ「海兵隊を送る
べきだ」と語りました。
訪米団は面談に先立ち３日午後２時、アーリントン無名兵士の墓を訪れ、米国とそ
の国民に敬意を表する意味で、家族会と救う会の名前をつけた花輪を捧げました。
４日午後には１４時４５分から１５時１５分のルーガー上院外交委員長との面談の
後に、１６時から１６時２０分フリスト上院議員（共和党院内総務）とも面談できる
ことになりました。

Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea (AFVKN) and National Association for the Rescue of Japanese Kidnapped by North Korea
(NARKN)

First and foremost, we would like to express our deepest respect for the people of the United Sates, who stand firm fighting against terrorism.
Because our loved ones were kidnapped by North Korea, we have been forced to remain in the front line of the fight against terrorism.
Although North Korea finally admitted their involvement in the kidnappings when Prime Minister Koizumi visited Pyongyang on September 17, 2002, the regime defiantly claimed that all of those who might be able to testify about North Korean terrorist activities, such as the KAL flight bombing, are dead. Their absurdly trumped-up story and blatantly faked documents only infuriate us all the more.
The five abductees, who were returned to Japan after twenty-four years of being held against their wills, have made it publicly known that they will never return to North Korea and that they want their children back. Nonetheless, North Korea continues to keep their children as hostages. According to our continuing investigation, claims of missing Japanese attributable to kidnapping by North Korea are increasing daily. Indeed the North Korean kidnapping is a typical example of ongoing terrorist activities, pure and simple.
The fact that North Korea denies their involvement in kidnapping South Koreans, denying that the kidnappings even took place despite evidence to the contrary, clearly shows that they are unremorseful.
Little time remains. Last year two elderly family members of the Japanese kidnap victims passed away. To speed up the resolution of the issue, we should put more pressure on the regime including economic sanctions and suspension of food aid, unless it can be guaranteed that it be delivered to the needy.
If we acquiesce and give economic aid, thereby yielding to their blunt threat that sanction means war, terrorists would presume that this is the way to take advantage of us. We have learned this from our unending fight against them. If the North Korean regime were to uses our sanction as a pretext for aggression, then the international community would have to be determined to stand even firmer against them. We believe that only by showing such rigid determination, can we deal with such regimes.
Through talking to American people during this visit to our ally, the United States, we strongly hope to renew our mutual determination not to allow terrorism to threaten nor to blackmail us.
